Onbara Kogen

Onbara Kogen sits in the northern hills of Okayama Prefecture, a modest resort built around two base areas—Panorama and Lakeside—though only Panorama is currently operating. The terrain skews heavily toward beginners and intermediates, with wide, low-angle runs that reward smooth rhythm over technical precision. Snowboarders make up a solid 40% of the rider split, and the vibe here is distinctly local and unhurried.

The mountain operates three pair lifts and runs until 4:30pm with no night skiing. A typhoon in August 2023 damaged facilities, and one run remains closed; the resort has been selective about reopening as aging infrastructure gets addressed. This is not a destination for chasing fresh tracks or hunting steep terrain—it's a place to practice, build confidence, and enjoy quiet days on forgiving slopes. The free snow-play area at the base is a draw for families.

Access and après-ski are modest. Kagamino Town is small, so plan accordingly if you're looking for evening energy or dining options. The appeal here is simplicity: affordable lift tickets, manageable crowds, and straightforward riding that doesn't demand much from you or the mountain.
