Iwanai is a tiny, uncrowded resort near Niseko where the real draw is cat skiing in the backcountry above the lift-serviced terrain. The piste is beginner-friendly with ocean views, but the mountain's identity has shifted almost entirely to guided powder tours.

How it rides

Iwanai sits on Hokkaido's west coast, about 45 minutes northwest of Niseko, and operates as something between a local family hill and a cat-skiing hub. The lift-serviced terrain is modest—a single pair lift serving groomed beginner and low-intermediate runs with views out to the ocean. The real action happens above the lift line, where Iwanai Cat Skiing operates guided tours through the upper slopes and sidecountry. Snow quality is excellent thanks to the coastal location and cold temperatures; the area receives substantial seasonal accumulation.

The base lodge has been updated with a cafeteria (wagyu burger is a highlight), a small bar, and rental/tuning services. Most visitors day-trip from Niseko, but staying in a ryokan in Iwanai town offers a quieter, more authentic Japanese experience—onsen soaks, local seafood, and a slower pace than the Niseko bubble. There are no lessons on the piste, and the lift-serviced terrain is genuinely small, so this works best if you're either learning in peace or using it as a rest day while your group does cat tours. Parking is free and easy; there's no public bus access, though cat-skiing operators provide transport from Niseko.
