White Valley

White Valley sits in the Tanigawa Onsen area near Minakami, about two hours from Tokyo, making it a natural day-trip option when the weather forecast looks good. The resort calls these "Premium Powder Days" and announces them the day before—when they do, the groomers stay home and 90% of the upper terrain opens untracked. You can traverse from the lift and drop open powder lines, plus there are small tree zones to explore. The lower beginner runs stay groomed, so learners get their own space while stronger riders lap the upper chair.

The layout is straightforward: two pair lifts, with the lower one serving wide beginner terrain and the upper one accessing steeper, more varied runs. The vertical is modest and the mountain is relatively protected, which helps it stay rideable when bigger resorts nearby get shut down by wind. That said, fresh powder gets tracked out quickly on weekends and powder days—this is a small hill with a loyal local following. On fine days, the west-facing aspect and low elevation mean snow quality can deteriorate fast, and the mountain is usually closed midweek, so timing matters.

The base area has a tiny lodge with rentals, lessons, and a cafeteria. Nearby Tanigawa Onsen has several ryokan and a municipal bath with rotenburo overlooking the river—worth a soak after riding. The Joetsu Shinkansen tunnel runs right under the base, a quirky detail that reminds you how close this place is to the city.
