Sapporo Kokusai is a small, snow-rich resort near Sapporo that punches above its weight for powder and off-piste riding. The trade-off: limited on-piste terrain and heavy weekend crowds from local day-trippers.

How it rides

Sapporo Kokusai sits in a microclimate that pulls serious snow—often more than nearby Niseko—with cold, dry Hokkaido powder that rewards riders willing to venture off the groomed runs. The on-piste terrain is genuinely limited and mellow, so confident riders will find the marked courses boring fast. But the real draw is the off-piste: tree-lined gullies, open powder stashes, and accessible sidecountry lines that stay relatively quiet once you step away from the main runs. The backcountry access is excellent for those with proper gear and route-finding skills.

Expect heavy weekend traffic from Sapporo locals—the base area and lift queues can get packed. The gondola has a singles line and decent wind fences, so it holds up better than nearby Kiroro in rough weather. There's a terrain park for beginners and intermediates, and a small kids' area with snow activities. Accommodation is at Jozankei Onsen (25 minutes away), Otaru, or back in Sapporo proper; there's no village at the base.

The flat run-out to the base can be a drag for snowboarders, and night skiing isn't available. Access by bus from Sapporo takes 1:40 and won't get you there for first lifts, so a car or staying locally is worth the logistics. If you're chasing powder and don't mind small terrain and crowds, Sapporo Kokusai delivers.
