Kanayasan

Kanayasan holds a unique place in Japanese skiing history—it's where Austrian Major Theodor Edler von Lerch taught the first skiers in the country back in 1911, and a small memorial museum near the base marks that milestone. Today it's a small, straightforward operation with one single lift serving four runs across beginner, intermediate, and advanced terrain in roughly equal splits.

The mountain sits at just over 20m base elevation in a low-lying region of Niigata that doesn't receive the snow it once did, which means the season can be short and snow reliability is a real question mark. The riding itself is mellow—nothing steep or demanding—but the flat terrain and low elevation mean you're managing run-outs and hoping for decent coverage. It's the kind of place that works best as a local hill or a quick historical stop, not a destination in its own right.
