Character

  • Local hill
  • Tree riding
  • Backcountry access

Akita Hachimantai is a tiny, remote mountain on Honshu that gets serious snow and stays uncrowded. It's a gem for powder hounds with backcountry ambitions and onsen access, but the single lift and minimal vertical demand you know what you're doing.

How it rides

Akita Hachimantai sits on the northwest slope of Mt Hachimantai in Akita Prefecture, pulling down massive snow volumes and staying quiet because it's only open weekends and holidays. The riding is mellow in-bounds—two runs with gentle pitch and some accessible tree terrain between them—but the real draw is the sidecountry and backcountry access. Lift-accessed trees on both sides of the piste are well-spaced and low-risk, perfect for learning tree riding on powder. Steeper lines drop into the Aka River drainage if you want more commitment, and the summit is a natural objective for ski touring or snowshoeing to see the juhyo (snow monsters).

The mountain is remote and takes effort to reach—you'll need 4WD and a solid hour from the nearest city—which keeps it under the radar and fresh. The base area is no-frills, but the geothermal landscape is striking, with fumaroles and onsen nearby. Goshogake Onsen is close by, and Yuze Onsen village (30 minutes away) has proper accommodation and excellent riverside baths. This is a place for riders with backcountry skills and a spirit for exploration, not a weekend resort destination.
